Words from a New-ish Mom

First birthdays are a milestone moment. Not just for the newly minted toddler, but for the parents who have spent an entire year learning and often struggling through life with a baby. When I look back at Isaac’s first year, I’m struck by how much my world has shifted, but also by how at peace I am at being a mom. There have been hard, hard lessons that have been learned, with many more lessons to come as Isaac continues to grow. I’m sharing a few things I’ve taken with me on the journey so far of motherhood.

Parenting is a long game and it’s everchanging. There are days (and nights) that your baby will just need you nonstop and that’s ok. When I was working on getting Isaac to sleep in his crib, it was hours of rocking, putting down, crying, picking up, and starting all over again. It was mentally and physically exhausting, but in the end Isaac had a lightbulb moment in understanding his sleep space and I was a better parent for it. Parenting takes grit and teaching them takes time. Everything about life with a baby is a series of steps and achievements that goes a lot slower than we as adults would like. I’ve learned to appreciate the chaotic season of life that I’m in and when we’ve had a rough day, I remind myself that there’s another day ahead that will be better.

Loving being a mom can co-exist with the fact that it’s the hardest thing you’ll ever do. They are not mutually exclusive. There’s beauty in the chaos and it can be equal parts wonderful and exhausting. There is also the idea that mothers will just instinctively know how to be a mom once their baby is born and that’s unrealistic. There’s a significantly higher percentage of what I didn’t know vs. what I did know. Google it, go to a Facebook mom group, there’s no shame in not knowing.

Parenting isn’t straight forward because kids are always changing. Before Isaac, I had the idea that when babies hit milestones like sleeping through the night that that was that. I could focus on the next thing because he was a night sleeper. I didn’t realize that Isaac would sleep through the night for a week, then get sick, get new teeth, go through a sleep regression, and then sleep through the night again. Babies are little people, not robots, and good sleepers will be bad sleepers, and vice versa. Once you think you have them figured out, they change again. Eating solid foods has been a big challenge for Isaac (and myself) as of late, and I am learning that you have to wade through a lot of muck to figure out solutions.

If there’s a buzz word that would describe the last year as a first time mom, it would be the word humbling. Isaac has brought so much joy, but also a reality check. I’ve learned that it does in fact take a village to raise a child and I gladly and gratefully accept the help that’s offered. Moms don’t have to carry the weight of parenthood on their shoulders alone, that burden should be spread around. There is NO shame is taking breaks or asking for help. Taking personal time helps you recenter and you come back reenergized. Babies deserve happy and healthy moms. After having an unplanned c-section, I needed a lot of help and I couldn’t haven’t gotten through my recovery without my husband, grandparents, family, extended family, and friends who did chores. let me sleep, cooked, and took a load off of me being a new mom.

Being a mom is hard and post partum recovery is equally hard, but there is no other title that I love more than mama. It’s a title that comes with a lot of laughter, pure chaos, tears, fears, and sleepless nights. Watching Isaac grow into a little boy from a baby is the greatest gift and achievement of my life. Kids are truly a blessing and I know that I’m living some of the best days that older parents often describe when looking back.

Spring Blazer

Spring Blazer

I’m loving this tweed blazer for spring!

If there’s a trend I’m already seeing for spring, it’s the mix of suit pieces with casual. It’s not a new trend, but for springtime, it’s a great opportunity to take a bright and colorful blazer and pair it with a vintage style sneaker and jeans. It’s also a great way to take your suit pieces from work and get some extra use of them as more of an everyday look. I’m all about versatile pieces. As far as the sneakers, these Nike’s are trending and I love the chunky style heel.

I’m wearing a 4 petite in this tweed blazer and it fits true to size. I paired it with a basic crewneck t-shirt, a colorful headband, a blush purse, and oversized sunglasses. The jeans are some of my favorite ankle jeans from Abercrombie and I wear them regularly! I consistently wear a 27 short in their sizing which translates to a 4 petite.

Similar options for this outfit:

Similar to the Nike’s are these white lace-up sneakers.

Similar bag option is this beige bag.

Similar blazer style is this chambray blazer from Loft.

Dressing for Ski Season

Dressing for Ski Season

I get asked a lot during the winter living in Colorado, what to wear on a ski trip! I’m here to tell you my top ski outfit tips so you can stay warm without sacrificing style!

For your time on the slopes – besides always wearing a helmet (making a fashion statement without a helmet just isn’t worth it), dress in layers when you’re on the mountain! Especially when spring skiing comes around, the temperature at the base of the mountain can be drastically different than at the top. In the spring. I’ve found myself in a t-shirt at the bottom and zipping back up in my ski jacket again when I hop off the lift. T-shirt, a wicked sweater, and winter coat on top means you can layer up or down as needed! I wear yoga pants underneath my snow pants, a neck scarf, a beanie under my helmet, goggles, and waterproof gloves. Make sure your gear is waterproof, no one wants to be cold and wet on the mountain. For skiers specifically, you’ll want thick wool socks to go under your ski boots. Comfortable socks are crucial to a happy ski day. DON’T fold them down or roll them! Make sure the sock is all the way up your leg with nothing else going into your boot because once you tighten your boots, you’ll feel everything going on in your boot and again, comfort is key. I also carry a waterproof backpack to carry water, a credit card, ID, and sunscreen.

Not pictured are my Solomon Lumen skis.

Essentials to pack for your ski trip –

Swimsuit (après time!), faux fur vest(s)/coat, faux leather leggings, and a couple of warm boot options. I like to bring tan/light colored options, as well as a black version. Pack turtlenecks, a tunic sweater, and a couple pairs of jeans. For coats, I suggest packing a more casual puffer jacket and a dressier option for dinners out. Cute and cozy beanies are also high on my pack list, and a couple of cozy scarves to match. Normally I would recommend some sort of heel for dinner or a dress, but honestly you rarely see dresses, and wearing a dark washed jean or legging is perfectly acceptable at dinner. Pairing your look with a faux fur coat or a patterned coat will elevate your look, Also, no one wants to slip on ice or trip wearing heels in a ski village, so a boot is also acceptable and normal. I promise you wont be over dressed.

My biggest piece of advice is to pack pieces that you can wear in multiple settings. Below, I’m wearing my faux leather leggings and Chelsea boots to make multiple outfits. Winter clothing takes up considerable space in your suitcase and rewearing turtlenecks, leggings, and boots is the best way to stay under that suitcase weight limit! Also, if you know it’s going to be chilly when you get off the plane, it may be worth wearing some of your bulky clothes on the plane. You’ll be warm when you deplane and it’ll save a little space in your luggage!

Below are five outfits I’ll wear on a ski trip. I have shared similar options when an item isn’t available. As always, my links are commissionable and I appreciate when you use them to make a purchase!

Life at Light Speed!

Life at Light Speed!

Hi my friends!

It has been awhile since I sat down and wrote a post! Life is going full steam ahead and I am happy to say that I am 7 months pregnant!

My first trimester I dealt with difficult morning sickness. Second trimester was much better. The third trimester is uncomfortable and pregnancy heartburn is no joke. Baby boy is looking healthy and will be arriving late spring! We have a couple of names picked out and are looking forward to starting this new adventure as parents.

I really didn’t dive into maternity specific fashion till I was partially through my second trimester, but I have found that PinkBlush has great maternity fashion that’s well priced! This t-shirt dress comes in a ton of colors and can be styled a ton of different ways! It’s a snug fit and I’m wearing my true size of small, but I would recommend sizing up if you want more room. Reimagining Tweed Dresses

When you think of tweed, you probably think of stuffy suits and shoulder pads. I’m happy to say that tweed is making a come back in a whole new way! Retailers are reimagining tweed dresses and making tweed stylish again.

I picked up this Tweed Fringe Dress from Red Dress and I’m absolutely in love with it! It fits true to size (I bought a size small). It is snug through the chest and it’s also shorter than I realized, but I like offsetting the shortness of this dress with a tall boot. The fringe adds an added layer of fun. I also added an embellished headband for an extra twist.

Tweed Dress from Red Dress. On sale for around $30.00!

Turtleneck Bodysuit from Red Dress

Headband from J. Crew is sold out, but Amazon has an identical one!

Boots from Target are sold out, but I’m sharing these Yancy Boots instead!

Fashion is so supposed to be fun, so why not embrace some pieces that are outside of your typical norm! Reimagining tweed dresses is fun as we approach 2021!
