The Realities of Grief

The Realities of Grief
What exactly is grief?

Grief is sadness and grief is pain. Grief is taking the memories that fill your brain and crying for both the special moments you shared, as well as the mundane. But what if you grieve for what never was and what never came to be? Grief that is longing for what we could not have and what we could not hold on to. Grief for the fleeting dreams that we so desperately wanted. On November 23, I began the lifelong grief that is losing a child. My sweet nephew was born with a rare genetic condition. He spent 8 days with us before my sister and brother in-law made the agonizing decision to turn off the medicine that was keeping his heart beating. When his heart stopped beating that day, a part of mine did too.

We were not ready.

My family was not prepared to let him go. No family ever is ever ready, but we were not equipped for a child to be born with a genetic condition. My sister and brother in-law have a toddler who is perfectly healthy. Being faced with the reality of a sick infant was shocking, confusing, and breathlessly painful. The doctors never suspected anything was wrong throughout my sister’s pregnancy and that unpreparedness has made the process of grieving that much more challenging. The feeling of powerlessness is an understatement. We had toys underneath the Christmas tree and a Christmas stocking with his name on it. I can only describe the helplessness as a wave that crashes down on you again and again. You are constantly pounded by another wave as you try to stand again.

In the face of such grief, nothing matters. Not brushing your hair, going to work, or any other normal life task. You just go through the motions of living and hope that there is a point where life matters again. Normal life though is gone and in its place is an empty shell of what life should have been like.

When you grieve for an adult, you grieve for the moments you shared. When you grieve for child, you grieve for the moments that will not come. First steps, first ice-cream cone, first car, first date, and all the puzzle pieces that snap together to create childhood and adolescence. Dreams that never came to fruition. For me, I grieve for the children my husband and I don’t yet have. Their playmate is gone, and they will also have to endure the burden of such a loss as they grow up.

There is a bench underneath my kitchen window, and I find myself sitting on the bench at night when the house is dark and silent. I stare out the window and I talk to my nephew. My neighbors across the field have their fences strung with Christmas lights and the colored displays hit my windowpane while I wonder if my nephew sees the shiny lights from heaven. I wonder who he would have been and I hope he has a warm blanket tucked around him as he sleeps on the clouds.

My family is different now and we are learning to live with a sadness that will never fully go away. I was so lucky to have met my nephew the day before the monitors were switched off. The hospital made an enormous exception during COVID to let us spend an afternoon with him. To me, the machines melted away and he was just a little boy being loved on by his aunts, uncles, and grandparents. He was awake, alert, and held my hand. Letting go of those 10 perfect fingers was the single most difficult moment of my life and I miss him every hour and every day.

How do you cope?

Grief is strange, grief is weird. If you find yourself grieving, please know that you are not alone. Also know that there is no right way to grieve. Grief can manifest itself in different ways and how you grieve is what’s right for you at that time. Having an amazing network of support has truly been our salvation. I can’t repay the kindness people have so selflessly shown my family. Know there’s love to be found in the sadness and that even though the pain becomes part of who you are, there are brighter and sunnier days ahead.

To Botox or Not – the Ageless Debate.

It’s National Botox Day!
We’ve likely all had the inner debate. To Botox or not? It’s still amazing to me to see the stigmas that comes with injections. Botox came onto the scene nearly two decades ago and I’m here to tell you that injections today are not your mother’s Botox. The world of cosmetic procedures has come along ways since then. While it’s perfectly normal to feel nervous before any cosmetic procedure, if you are in the hands of a knowledgeable professional, there really isn’t much to worry about. DO YOUR RESEARCH and don’t take the decision lightly if getting any sort of injection is something you want to pursue.

As with anything, there’s a balance. There’s irony in wanting to stay youthful and coming out the other side looking even older than when you started. Think about the phrase, “less is more.” A lot of women fear the frozen brows (some genuinely love it), or they are fearful of what people will think of them for getting “work done.” It’s 100% ok to ask for help if we need it; all an injection is, is asking for help to age a little more gracefully. What’s wrong with that?

Some women like more obvious work and our differences are what make us unique. If you want a more unnatural look, GO FOR IT! At the end of the day, if you’re happy in who you are, then there isn’t a darn thing wrong with it!

Let me tell you a little about me personally.

I spent a lot of days in a tanning bed through my high school years and despite that I’ve been pretty lucky with lines and wrinkles. My problem area that does show the most age is my forehead. I have a pretty wide forehead and with a blonde/medium skin tone, my forehead takes on more sun over anywhere else. It wasn’t till I was 27 that I decided to start looking into small cosmetic upgrades. I’m here to tell you that I’ve loved exploring what a “med spa” offers and I go to people who are highly skilled and knowledgeable. An injection might leave a little bruising and any needle prick isn’t pleasant, but if you like the results, then it’s worth it. If you don’t like the end result, it is completely false that you can’t undo it. Most results from injections like Botox last about 3 months.

It’s important to note that cosmetic procedures on the outside won’t necessarily be a fixer if you’re struggling on the inside. While they can be a great confidence booster, you still need to love yourself, flaws and all. Cosmetics work can only highlight the best parts of who you are already!

To Botox or not – the ageless debate will continue on, but I do hope you make the right decision for yourself so you can look and feel your best!

Abercrombie & Fitch Fashion Favorites for Fall 2020

Abercrombie & Fitch Fashion Favorites for Fall 2020
I recently did a fall try on for some of Abercrombie’s new fall pieces! Abercrombie has REALLY evolved from its days in the 00s. They have chic pieces that are modern, trendy, and clean looking. I recommend checking out Abercrombie’s website and taking a look at their fall collection!

Here are my Abercrombie & Fitch Fashion Favorites for Fall 2020! I purchased a Mock Neck Logo Sweatshirt with “Paris” text (size small fits me true to size). Travel Joggers in black (size small short length). A seamless bra cami in white (size small fits me true to size). Wool Blend Blazer Coat in grey (wear a small petite). And finally, Curve Love Ultra High Rise Ankle Straight Jeans (wear a 27 S).

The Mock Neck Sweatshirt comes with the “Paris” text in blue or taupe. It also comes with “New York” text in Dark Brown or White. The neck hole is very slim. Once it’s on it looks great, but it doesn’t slip easily over your head. I recommend doing your makeup/hair after you put on the sweatshirt.

The Travel Joggers come in Black, Dark Grey, and Olive Green. They also come in short lengths which is great for petites! These joggers have a windbreaker type of fabric and have a high cinched waist. They are VERY comfortable and can be styled in a number of ways!

The Seamless Bra Cami comes in both Black and White colors. It’s stretchy and has adjustable straps. It’s a great lightweight cami style bra that is a great basic to have in your closet.

Who doesn’t love a good blazer?

The Wool Blend Blazer Coat comes in Light Grey, Tan, Houndstooth, Camel, and Black Plaid. I love that there’s an option for petites! Since it’s a hybrid of a blazer and a coat, the cut is a little longer length wise. I love that it can be worn with jeans or it would look great with a dressier work pant.

The Curve Love Ultra High Rise Ankle Straight Jeans are some of my favorite jeans out there for petites! I also love the Curve Love line that Abercrombie carries. They design the jeans with curvier bodies in mind. There is more fabric in the thighs & hips and they are extra stretchy! The Curve Love collection is available in multiple jean cuts and you’ll love them if you’re like me and struggle to find a good fitting jean.

I hope you enjoyed my Abercrombie & Fitch Fashion Favorites for Fall 2020!

Surviving Home Renovation

Surviving Home Renovation
When you think about taking on a big home overhaul, you know it’s stressful. It isn’t until you’re living out of a suitcase and living in your childhood bedroom, do you really realize how exhausting and overwhelming a home renovation actually is. I am giving you my tips for surviving home renovation and hopefully you’ll come out the other side with a few less grey hairs.

I am currently in rounding the corner to the first and hopefully, most challenging leg of our two part reno process. I’m not sugar coating it here, surviving a home renovation is HARD. The day my husband and I saw our house, I told him that it was the right one. Even before actually touring the house, I knew it was meant to be. It ticked so many different boxes on our massively long list and we really didn’t intend to look for a house needing a face lift, it was just something that we both new needed to happen because the house was 15 years old. It also made sense to us to do as much work as possible before we moved in because once you’re living in the space, it’s 10x more difficult to get projects done.

Our decision was to hire a design firm that paired us with a general contractor to do the work. We met with a few different design firms before we landed on a local business. My number one advice for hiring a design firm and GC is to ensure that you mesh well together. Having a good relationship is ESSENTIAL. Not all designers will be your cup of tea and if you go with someone you aren’t crazy about in the beginning, you will have major regrets once you dive into the actual renovation. Be open about what you’re willing to spend and it’s a huge red flag if they pressure you to go with more expensive features and finishes.

Let’s talk about budget!

My husband I were naïve when it came to our budget, even though we knew it would be expensive. When you account for labor costs + the cost of materials, you should plan to double your budget or cut down on projects. Looking back, our first budget was laughable, but you learn as you go! We picked the exact right team for us and took the time to research the most highly rated companies. It’s such huge undertaking, that not rushing things is important.

Let’s also talk timelines!

I also think we were unrealistic in our timeline and thought we could make living in a reno zone work. It doesn’t work. No bathroom, rooms taped off, no kitchen, it just wasn’t happening. Our contractor is fabulous at keeping deadlines and his team works hard (often working weekends). With that said, things change and I’ve learned to roll with the punches. To that point, trying to do a major remodel in a pandemic is both stressful and challenging in a unique way. Supplies and materials are harder to nail down and workers’ schedules are different. We found that many companies are still playing catch up from quarantine and since everyone is spending more time at home, people are wanting to do updates to their homes now more than ever.

We had an incredibly hard tough time purchasing a washer & dryer for our laundry room (crazy right?!) We’ve been very lucky with the pace, but the work still till takes time. Being patient is hard, but you just have to push through. I’ve found myself thinking we’re at the point where I can unbox stuff, but we still have entire spaces taped off and covered in dust. Moving in just isn’t realistic yet and that’s ok!

It’s OK if you’re not OK.

Even though I knew the house would be a mess, there have been times when the mess of everything has overwhelmed me. My biggest piece of advice is to trust in the process. Again, trust the people doing it. I trust our GC enough to know if something looks out of place or not right, he has a reason and he’ll always take my calls or emails if I have questions.

I hope if you’re thinking of taking on a reno, that my experience has given you some insight! Take the time to establish your wants vs. needs and that you map out a game plan going forward. It’s not easy, but at the end of the day, surviving home renovation will get you a house that’s worth all the effort and tears it took to get there!
