What Exactly is Healthy Skin?

What Exactly is Healthy Skin?
I’m sure you have heard the expression, healthy skin comes from within. But what does that mean exactly? We know that diet, sleep, and exercise are important to keeping our skin happy, but our skin is also incredibly unique and certain products that work for some, don’t necessarily work for others and that is ok! If something doesn’t work, keep trying other products till you find what works for you and YOUR skin! I’m sharing a few products that I love that are great for skin that I hope are great for yours as well!

What exactly is healthy skin? That’s the ultimate question. A few years back I was SO excited to try some of Tatcha’s skincare products. They were a newer name in skincare and I quickly jumped on board the band wagon. I eagerly bought a slew of products. After a few weeks, instead of my skin looking fresh and flawless, I was struggling with redness and breakouts. I took it personally that their skincare line didn’t work for me and instead of looking at skincare as something that constantly changes and evolves, I got frustrated at the products themselves. It wasn’t till I started using a combination of SkinMedica and Sunday Riley that I realized I was looking at skincare the wrong way.

So how did I find what worked for my skin?

I was introduced to SkinMedica at my local med spa and the thing I love most about it is that it’s real, sophisticated products. Their skincare is designed to heal, restore, and do the real work that a lot of other companies say, but don’t deliver on. There aren’t many perfume based products and they are designed with the medical factor that you want in your skincare as you age.

I use a range of products including their Dermal Repair Cream, AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser, and their Age Defense Retinol Cream. If you’re new to retinols, start with a lower level because it will take your skin time to build up a higher tolerance. Retinol creams can sting and you don’t want to make your skin angry! I usually buy my skincare products through the Dermstore because they have a great rewards system. Also, if you sign up for their emails, they will occasionally have sales for the products you want! I wait till I see a SkinMedica email come through and then buy my products at that time.

Let’s talk about the other brand that I’m using.

The other skincare product that is worth the hype is Sunday Riley’s Good Genes Lactic Acid. Lactic acid is an exfoliant that leaves your skin smooth and even looking. I apply it 5 days a week after washing my face and before I apply my face cream. If you have sensitive skin, it does tingle. It’s suggested to apply it as a mask, washing it off after about 15 minutes. You’ll see results after only a few uses. It does have a lemony smell, but I don’t mind it and love the texture of my skin after I use it. The Lactic Acid can also be purchased through the Dermstore and Sunday Riley also has some other great products like the Luna Sleeping Oil or the box duo of Good Genes and Luna Oil if you’re wanting to dip your toes in their product line!

What exactly is healthy skin? Well, that’s ultimately up to you. Listen to your body and remember to take care of yourself, you are worth it!

Styling Faux Leather Leggings 3 Ways

Styling Faux Leather Leggings 3 Ways
Who doesn’t love Spanx! They are so flattering while keeping you ever so stylish. I am sharing 3 ways to style Faux Leggings from Spanx for fall weather!

Before I discuss styling Faux Leather Leggings 3 ways, lets talk more about the product. These Spanx leggings retail for $98.00, so they aren’t cheap, but I compare them to a good pair of jeans. You will have them a long time if you care for them properly and you can style them in SO many ways. The leggings come in regular, petite (yay!), and tall sizes. I wear a small petite and I still found them a touch long and tucked the bottom under. Overall, they are a great pair of leggings and I look forward to wearing them on repeat!

Let’s head into the styling!

For my first look I paired the Spanx Leggings with a Softspun Pullover Hoodie from Gap and Cloudfoam sneakers in a black color. I love Adidas for tennis shoes and the Cloudfoams are great as more of a fashion shoe, as well as working out. I go with the rule that they are still a legging and you have to cover your butt! A top that’s longer is necessary (times have changed, but I still think your booty needs covering).

For my second look, I paired the Spanx leggings with the Dillion Utility Shirt from Banana Republic. I love the light chambray fabric and color paired with the darkness of the legging. The button up comes in both petite and non petite sizes (I wear small petite). I finished the look with a black bootie. I can’t share this exact boot because it’s a last year style, but I am sharing the Nadalie Pointed Toe Bootie from Nordstrom and the Vince Camuto Bibestie Bootie from DSW. Both are great and stylish black boot options!

Finally, I paired the Spanx leggings with a a long black open cardigan and a floppy felt hat. I have a basic black t-shirt underneath. My cardigan recommendations are the Open Front Cardigan from Nordstrom or the Open Stitch Cardigan, also a Nordy find! For the floppy hat, Target has a great option from New Day and Nordstrom Rack has the Wide Brim Wool & Leather Fedora. For the shoes, I wanted this look to be a little more edgy and paired the leggings with a lace up combat boot. This pair of Forget Yesterday Black Combat Boots from Red Dress are SO cute!

Bandelettes for Thigh Protection

I am sharing something that changed my world about 4 years ago! -Bandelettes for thigh protection is the best invention! EVER. I found Bandelettes and I’ve never look back. I’m a girl with thicker legs/thighs and thigh chafe is real. ESPECIALLY in the summer. I bought Bandelettes before I went to Italy to get married and because of them, I was able to enjoy short dresses and site seeing without painful chafing. They slide up each leg and have a little grip on the top to make sure they stay in place. They feel like a good pair of spandex and I wear them when I run and under dresses. I buy my pairs from Walmart (good ol’ Walmart) and they come in both a basic look, as well as lacier versions. I am also including a size guide (I am a 23 meaning I am a B size). Grab a fabric tape measure and measure the middle of your thigh. Where you fingers overlap is your size!

Sustainable Fashion and Why it Matters

Sustainable Fashion and Why it Matters

Today is National Thrift Shop Day! That means it’s a day to head to your local thrift store and do some shopping. It’s also an opportunity to talk about sustainable fashion and why it matters.

What exactly is “sustainable fashion?” Well, that’s a tricky question. At it’s core, it’s fashion that made with sustainable practices in mind and they work towards lessening their environmental impact (ie., they use recycled materials to generate new clothing, the waste they produce is offset, etc.). From the consumer stand point, sustainable fashion is seeking out brands that are environmentally conscious and being aware of where and how your clothes are made. We do that with food, why not with fashion? It also means recycling or repurposing your clothes instead of sending them to the trash. Also, thrifting! We all like to shop new, but thrifting is a great way to save some money, find some great pieces, and buy what’s already out there. I am sharing a few thrift stores and vintage shops that I have found as an alternative to buying new.

My list is below!

Beyond Retro – This London brand has a KILLER online store. Find anything vintage from the 1960s through the 1990s. Looking for original Levi’s? Look no further! They have an amazing (and HUGE) collection and everything is well priced and affordable.

NXC Vintage Shop – This NYC Vintage Shop has some of the funnest and brightest vintage pieces! NXC is also a black owned business and supporting BLM is an equally as important cause to support.

Maeven Vintage – You can’t talk about thrifting without an Etsy feature. Enter, Maeven Vintage. This Brooklyn based shop has vintage jewelry, accessories, and clothing. They have pieces from the 1960s through the 90’s (major Rachel Green vibes). They also have a wide variety of prices and because it’s Etsy, they offset 100% their shipping emissions.

Finally, and certainly not least, is Urban Renewal – Who knew Urban Outfitters had a vintage store? Their vintage collection is SUPER affordable and their model of “upcycling” old pieces is a great way to repurpose and reuse. They currently have some of the cutest tie-dye pieces for around $40.00 USD.

I also wanted to give a shout out to one of my favorite sustainable brands!

Reformation is AWESOME. They use their “RefScale” to track their environmental impact and share that information on their product pages. They also keep their buyers informed of their impact with sustainability reports and support global organizations that work to offset what they produce. Personally, I am thrilled that they added petite sizes and love supporting their mission of sustainability. Their pieces aren’t cheap, but producing sustainably comes at higher price tag (at least for now). Hopefully in the future, as more companies choose to follow a similar model, the prices will lower. Reformation does have good sales from time to time and you can get some great pieces for a heavy discount. The Rocki dress I’m sharing is currently on sale.

I hope talking about sustainable fashion and why it matters can help you make informed decisions as a consumer. I also hope this post inspired you to think outside the box when it comes to buying “new” pieces for your wardrobe and to research what brands our there are doing to lessen the waste they produce.

Cheers to being thrifty!

The BEST Instant Tanner for Summer

What is the best instant tanner for summer? I have been using Bondi Sands for years now and it is hands down the best instant tanner around! No need for a salon or a expensive spray. It’s made by Australians (beach people know a good tan) and I love how much color I get by using it. I use the foam version and squirt some on the mit for application (I use the light/medium, but I’m including the darker tone as well). It goes on smooth and most importantly it’s a natural tan! NO ORANGE glow. It also smells great and the coloring lasts 4-5 days before I reapply. I’m also including the back sponge for those of you that don’t have an extra set of hands to get those tough to reach areas. You will seriously have an amazing summer glow after you use it. I’m also not doing this as an ad, it’s just that good.

Give me your feedback or thoughts on the best instant tanner for summer 2020!

Road Trip Must Haves-

1. Bee & Willowâ„¢ Home Picnic Basket with 4 Place Settings – My hubs and I registered for a picnic basket when we got married and it remains one of my favorite things we ever got! Why not stop on the side of the road, enjoy the scenery, and enjoy an impromptu lunch?

2. Will Shortz Presents Road Trip Sudoku – I love a good mind teaser game and Sudoku is always one of the best!

3. Dot’s Homestlye Pretzels – Ah, Dot’s! They are one of my favorite road trip snacks. A nice buttery, peppy twist to munch on during hours in the car.

4. Neutrogena Beach Defense Sunscreen Spray – SPF 50 – Neutrogena is my GO-TO sunscreen on vacation. The spray is light, non greasy, and it smells so good. I’ve had people I’m with go and invest in a can because it’s that good!

5. Picnic Time® Ottoman Cooler in Grey – I can’t express this enough, I LOVE this cooler! It is not only a cooler, it also acts as a bench or ottoman up to 350 pounds. If you’re on the side of the road for a lunch break, you can sit on cooler and still be comfortable! It has a divider between the cold storage and dry storage so that everything isn’t at the same temperature. The dry storage also has a front opening so you can easily grab your snacks from the front seat without digging around.

6. BlueAvocado® Zip 2-Pack Snack Bags – I’m ALL about road trip snack and these snack bags are the perfect size to pre-pack some of my favorite treats!

7. Dream Zoneâ„¢ Sleep Mask – Everyone needs a good sleep mask when traveling. I’ve used the Dream Zone since my freshmen college dorm days and love it’s silky, lightweight texture.

8. Ello Jones 11oz Vacuum Insulated Stainless Steel Travel Mug – This travel mug is the perfect size to fit in your cup holder and fits under single serve machines (shout out to the 7-11 coffee dispenser). It’s insulation means your cold drink will stay cold and your hot drink will still be toasty up to 5 hours after you pour that cup of joe.

9. Fujifilm Instax Mini 11 Camera – There is something that feels quintessentially road trip about a Polaroid camera. Digital photos are great, but having instant photos to keep forever is special. Why not invest in an Instax Mini and snap those vacation memories as they happen?

10. Rechargeable Book Light 5 LED Clip-on Reading Light – There is nothing worse then straining your eyes trying to read at night when you have inadequate light. This rechargeable book light has 3 colors of light and brightness to accommodate different lighting needs throughout the day/night. You wont have to put down your book when the sun starts to go down!

11. Newton Ridge Plus Hiking Boot – Hiking boots don’t have to be ugly! Colombia is the king of the outdoor wear and these Newton hiking boots are both practical and stylish. The cognac color with the red laces creates a rustic look without compromising on the cute.

12. The North Face Jester 28L Women’s Backpack – I’m a firm believer in investing in a good backpack and North Face is one brand you cannot go wrong with. This women’s backpack is great for a road trip because the molded straps mean it’s comfortable, while the roomy main sized compartment means you can pack a decent amount of stuff inside. It has a laptop sleeve and extra room on the outside for two water bottles.

13. Moroccan Magic Lip Balm – Coconut Almond – I’ve talk about Moroccan Magic on my Instagram before, but they have some of the best lip balm! It’s oil based meaning your lips are left a lot smoother vs. a regular balm. Moroccan Magic is also vegan and cruelty free, meaning everything is clean without animal byproducts.

14. Samsonite® Magic 2-in-1 Travel Pillow with Pocket – Samsonite is known for great travel products and I’ve been using their suitcases for ages. They also sell travel pillows and the travel one is fantastic. It converts from U shape to square to accommodate different sleep positions and it has a slot to store your earbuds.

15. Sony XB12 Portable Wireless Bluetooth Speaker – Big beats, little size. This portable speaker from Sony delivers quality sound in a compact size. It’s also waterproof AND dust proof, so you don’t have to worry about the elements.

Homemade Zucchini Bread Recipe

Homemade Zucchini Bread Recipe
One of the staples in my house when I was growing up was my mom’s zucchini bread. We grew zucchinis in our backyard during the summer and when they were ready to be picked, you better believe my sister and I were ready for my mom to get busy baking in the kitchen. These zucchinis are from my sister’s garden and I am sharing my mom’s homemade zucchini bread recipe with you all! Filled with notes of cinnamon and summer squash, this recipe is perfect with a morning coffee or a side at a summer cookout.

What goes into a homemade zucchini bread recipe? Besides the zucchini, it’s a pretty simple recipe to make. It also doesn’t require any yeast and you can be slathering butter on a piece of bread straight out of the oven in about an hour and a half. You will need a grater to shred the zucchini beforehand, but that’s all you will really need besides your mixing bowls and bread pans. Make sure you lick the bowl clean when you are done, it’s also required.

-Ingredients for homemade zucchini bread-

1 C. vegetable oil

3 eggs beaten

1/4 tsp baking powder

1 tsp baking soda

2 C. white sugar

1 tsp salt

2 C. grated and peeled zucchini (leaving the skin on will make the loaf taste bitter)

2 tsp vanilla

3 C. all purpose flour

3 tsp of cinnamon

Ingredients needed for the zucchini bread (minus the flour)
Ingredients needed, minus 3 eggs.

Grease your pans! This is always where I begin when I’m baking and I go the old fashion way with oil and flour. I use two bread loaf size pans and the batter is enough to make two loaves, but you could do one if you like a taller loaf.

zucchinis and my large grater
The shredded zucchini

Combine wet ingredients (eggs, oil , vanilla) and blend well. Stir in the the dry ingredients (flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and sugar. At this point, you may think you’ve made a mistake because the dough is THICK. Zucchini holds a lot of water and when you add in your zucchini, the dough will loosen and turn to a batter. Below is what the dough looks like before you add the zucchini and after.

Stir till the mixture is well combined and pour into your bread pans. Again, you can use a singular bread pan, but for me, I like having it in two. Bake for 60 to 75 minutes depending on how how much batter you used. Bake at 325 to 350. For my two loaves, I did 330 for about an hour and five minutes. I also started with the loaves covered in foil and took it off to cook the rest of the way about half way through.

My mom likes to cook them for 10 minutes at the higher temp and then bring the temp down to 325 for the rest of the time. That method works too! You’ll know it’s done when the center comes out clean!

The bread has a nice rich color when it’s finished!
Add a little spread of butter out of the oven and you’ll be in bread nirvana! Bam! Homemade zucchini bread!

I use the leftover zucchini for fritters, as a side dish, or add it to a quiche. I hope you enjoy this homemade zucchini bread recipe and would love to hear your comments/feedback!

How to Dress for Important Life Events

How to Dress for Important Life Events
Purchasing a home is the biggest financial decision you will ever make. It’s a stressful and rewarding time that causes a whole range of emotions from the highest of highs to low moments of frustration and anxiety. What should you wear to important life events like a home closing, big presentation, or huge job interview? I’m here to help you dress the part because what you wear impacts how you feel about yourself and how other people will perceive you. You also want to look put together and exude confidence in the moments that matter most.

My husband I recently purchased our second home together. Knowing how to dress for important life events is part of playing the game and I wanted to dress well for our closing. Dressing the part made me feel confident in my decision making and I didn’t want to look sloppy. I’m showing you what I wore on that big day so that you have a good idea of what to wear to your home closing when that day happens (or any big meeting that’s in your future!)

Onto the outfit!

I wore these Carrson Heels from Steve Madden. An alternative to the tall version is the Irenee Sandal, also by Steve Madden. It’s a touch shorter and a little more demure. A heel is a must and if you don’t like a tall style, shorter versions are always an option!

I paired the heels with a Petite Strappy Cami from Banana Republic and Petite Modern Sloan Skinny-Fit Washable Pants, also by BR. Other options are these Richmond 7/8 Pants by Boden. They come in a TON of colors like Lupen and Moroccan Blue. These Slim Fit Stretch Crepe Pants are available in petite sizes are a great alternative. They will be included in the big Nordstrom Anniversary Sale in August! I love bright colors, but during big events, less is more. Neutrals and basics don’t necessarily equal boring. You can stand out, without overdoing it!

My blazer is an older version from Ann Taylor, but Boden’s Smyth Ponte Blazer comes in petite sizes. It is available in a wide range of colors ranging from Berry Sorbet to Black. Other options are the Petite Classic-Fit Washable Blazer by Banana Republic and the Notch Collar Cotton Blend Blazer from Nordstrom that will be included in the Nordy Sale!

If you have major milestones coming your way, I I hope this post helped you think about how to dress for important life events. It’s a hectic time and what you wear shouldn’t be stressful! Dress comfortable, dress confident, and the world will open up for you!

DIY Tie Dye Fashion

DIY Tie Dye Fashion
Tie dye has never fully gone out of style, but it seems that in the last year or two, it has come back in a big way. Space dye is incredibly popular and you will find it in lounge-wear, graphic t-shirts, scrunchies, and hats. This week, I’m sharing my DIY tie dye project and showing you how to get cute, on trend fashion without having to break the bank!

DIY Tie Dye fashion is super easy to do and it’s only a little messy (most kits come with a set of gloves). To start, I bought two basic white t-shirts from Michael’s and a tie dye kit. I am going to be honest with you, tie dye kits are hard to come by right now and I was kind of shocked by this! It’s another thing that quarantine has made difficult to get. I found a kid’s tie dye kit (made for young girls) at Target and I only used the dye, containers, and rubber-bands. I skipped assembling the tie dye swirl spinner! This is the Swirl & Style kit that I used. It would be a great family activity if you have kids looking for something to do.

Let’s talking about tying styles!

I used two different methods on the shirts for tying. For the first one, I used the swirl style method before adding the rubber-bands. Some people use a fork in the middle of the shirt and swirl it, but I just used my hands and started with a twist in the middle while the shirt was flat on the table. I did the first shirt in purple, blue, and a few squirts of green. For the second shirt, I wanted to try a free form style and just tied knots in different parts of the shirt. I dyed shirt number two with purple, yellow, and red.

The kit came with ten dye packs and i used a total of five tablets. I mixed the dyes in the sink (follow the instructions closely on this) and did the dyeing portion in my garage. I spent about ten minutes on each squirting the dye and getting it in the creases. Make sure you flip it over and do the back of the shirt as well! A lot of people forget about the backside. I photographed the shirts the morning after (they need to sit for about 8 hours to dry). I left them overnight and then rinsed them in the sink. It’s recommended to do this for the reds/purples because those colors bleed.

How did they come out? You tell me!

I really liked how shirt number one came out with the purple and blue. You can see the swirl and it isn’t overdone. I honestly don’t enjoy shirt two as much. The yellow overlapped with the purple in spots and created a brown color. I also don’t enjoy the more haphazard pattern. I would do a different set of colors for shirt two, but am still pleased that I have a couple of fun new shirts to wear out!

Finally, I am sharing how I styled shirt number one below. I am wearing Raw Hemmed Crop Jeans by Top Shop and Havana Sliders by Steve Madden. These jeans fit snug! I am normally a 27 which is equivalent of a 4, but in these jeans I’m a 28. My other recommendation is the Wedgie Jeans by Levi. I wear a 28 x 28 because again, they are a snug fit. It is getting later into summer and that means stores are starting to sell out of certain clothing items (sandals, shorts, etc), but check out my LikeToKnow.it page for links to similar styles! The app is free and will give you access to all my looks. I knotted the tie dye T-shirt in front for shape and paired it with silver hoop earrings.

I am also including my top tie dye finds if you aren’t into DIY-ing and want to do a little bit of shopping! Shoes, t-shirts, lounge-wear, hats, and dress are all included!
